AMD to own less of chipmaking spinoff

28 Apr 2010

However, as a result of amendments between AMD and ATIC, AMD will own approximately 34.2 percent and ATIC will own approximately 65.8 percent of the Foundry Company’s fully converted common stock, AMD said Monday.

“All other material economic terms of the transaction agreements remain unchanged. ATIC will still invest $2.1 billion to purchase its stake in the Foundry Company, of which it will invest $1.4 billion directly in the new entity and will pay $700 million to AMD,” the

Toshiba, SanDisk to cut flash chip output

26 Apr 2010

SanDisk will provide additional details when it holds its fourth-quarter 2008 earnings conference call.

Toshiba plans to cut flash memory chip production starting in January, citing the global economic slowdown. SanDisk, which operates manufacturing lines jointly with Toshiba, said it will follow suit.

The Yokkaichi facility has four fabs. Fab 3 and Fab 4 produce NAND flash memories on 300-millimeter wafers, Fab 1 and Fab 2 on 200mm wafers, Toshiba said. “Prior

Judge Papermaster’s first day at Apple delayed

21 Apr 2010

A judge has granted IBM’s preliminary injunction aimed at preventing former executive Mark Papermaster from reporting for duty as Apple’s new
iPhone leader.

Updated at 4:55 p.m. PST with comment from Apple.

Apple hired Papermaster as the new head of iPhone and
iPod development earlier this month, but IBM sued Papermaster last week claiming he is violating the terms of a noncompete agreement with IBM in accepting the job at Apple. U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth

Snipe Swipe helps you win eBay auctions

21 Apr 2010

It’s worth noting that sniping is not discouraged by eBay, as the online auctioneer has its own proxy bidding tool. However, third party tools such as Snipe Swipe are constantly trying to outwit this system, which is why these tools have garnered a less-than-respectable reputation in the eBay community.

Once installed you’ll get a new button on any auction page that lets you set it to be sniped. After you’ve done this, it gets flagged in Snipe Swipe’s system and will be bid on

Lock-in is everywhere

21 Apr 2010

And, as Alistair Croll of Bitcurrent noted on the panel, the higher you move up the stack–the more abstractions you make use of above the basic infrastructure–the more lock-in you tend to inherit. The fact is that those abstractions (such as mechanisms to handle scaling for you automatically) save you work, but they also tend to be platform-specific.

One of the problems with this discussion is that "interoperability" or "portability" in the "cloud" c

Microsoft details app store plans

21 Apr 2010

Microsoft announced plans for the mobile application store at last month’s Mobile World Congress. The store is set to debut with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 in the fourth quarter of this year.

The software maker defended the charge: “Microsoft will run a rigorous certification process to ensure that the end user’s experience is optimal, and that the device and network resources aren’t used in a malicious way,” a Microsoft representative said in a statement. “This process has

21 Apr 2010

Attackers are attempting to exploit an unpatched security hole in Excel that could allow someone to take control of a compromised computer, Microsoft said in a security advisory on Tuesday.

The attack exploiting the Excel Unspecified Remote Code Execution Vulnerability requires a computer user to open an attachment sent via e-mail that has a maliciously crafted Excel document, according to the advisory.

Microsoft said it is working on a security fix to

Gartner and UBS provide a mixed view on IT spendin

21 Apr 2010

Two key trends driving spend lower include: 1) revenue pressures, write-offs and cash conservation that are causing financial institutions to look at technology spending for savings as it typically accounts for the largest non-personnel expense on the P&L and 2) people are thinking about buying less yet still being able to do more. Looking out to the December quarter, while the year end is typically the busiest period to close deals with vendors, expectations are that there are not likel

Apple debunks Mac Mini, iMac rumor

21 Apr 2010

Apple has taken the rare step of denying speculation that new Macs are on the way.

As Macworld’s Jim Dalrymple points out, the iMac and Mac Mini seem overdue for a hardware update, making it quite plausible that new versions would be along some time soon. But Apple appears to be saving those updates for a later date, perhaps at the annual Macworld conference in January.

Earlier Monday, reports surfaced that Apple was getting ready to release an updated version o
